Abstract

This paper examines the phenomenon of whalewatching, a multimillion dollar a year growth industry that treads a fine line: on one end lies a quality opportunity for the public to view endangered species and be exposed in general to the marine environment; on' the other end lies the harassment of and adverse impact on an endangered species. However, in evaluating potential impacts to whales, managers must recognize that few affordable means exist for the average citizen to gain a firsthand appreciation of our rare and threatened wildlife-be they terrestrial or

marine.
